4th Seminar "People with motor Disability in a camp environment"

From 27 to 30 of May, SKEP participated in the 4th Seminar "People with Motor Disability in a Camp Environment" organized by the Association of People with Disability and their Friends "PERPATO" in Thassos. For four days Panagiotis Pitsiniagkas and Thalia Kiousi, our executives, participated in activities relating to physical disability: therapeutic riding, assistant dogs, adapted sports and hobbies such as T.In Basket, diving and dancing in wheelchair, Art Therapy and learned useful information on wheelchairs, transfers and prosthetics.

4o Love and Acceptance Festival

The 4th Love Festival: "Different possibilities - Same rights" was successfully conducted . This year we celebrated the dignity of Diversity, the focus was on human rights for people with mobility problems. The proncipal promised to ensure equal presence and access of all students in the school. The 2nd Primary School of Acharnai protects the rights of all pupils in education, in expression and equal opportunities, regardless their ethnicity, religion or disability.

25 - 27/05 2016, European Conference for Human Rights, University of Ioannina

Athena Kritikou, President of the Association, presented SKEP's assessment in the context of the conferences' thematics "People with Special Educational Needs and Human Rights". The conference entitled "Human Rights in a Changing World. Research and Applied Approaches» organized by the University of Ioannina, the Department of Preschool Education, the Greek Psychologists Association and the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations. The Conference will be held at the Congress Centre of the University of Ioannina "Karolos Papoulias", from 25 to 27 May 2016.

Even if one student changes his cast of mind, it's a gain!

3.037 students in 54 schools, from October 2015 to April 2016, participated in the program "Familiarizing students of general education with Disability" that S.K.E.P. - Social Responsibility for Children and Youth held.

Discrimination lays in deeply rooted beliefs. Our society keeps prejudices and stereotypical perceptions of diversity and disability. The lack of daily contact and required knowledge combined with ignorance are the causes of negative attitudes and rigid perceptions regarding the image of disability.

Mylotopos High School

Yesterday we  met with the kids from the High School of Milotopos Municipality in Pella! The students have formed groups that each has undertaken a task to find out different informations regarding disability and then, in turn,present them to their peers!
It was a very pleasant conversation despite the fact that the children had just arrived in Athens after seven hours on the road!

Can someone with disability have a good life?

Today we visited about 120 children in the 62nd High School of Athens and a girl's reaction when Panagiotis explained howdisability is not an obstacle to have a full and good life, made us very happy .
She explained that recently a family member of hers had a similar accident and so far she has been too pessimistic but now feels way much better!

Special Kindergarten and Elementary School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Argyroupolis

We visited the Special Kindergarten and Elementary School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Argyroupolis. It was a different experience for us, because for the first time our open dialogue was conducted in sign language!
We were in a colorful and happy school where our children greeted us enthusiastically and full of questions. We were impressed by the directness of their questions and their attempt to bridge their communication differences with Panagiotis, since he does cannot sign.

Junior High School of Aniksis' Municipality

We visited one of our favorite schools, the Junior High School of Aniksis' Municipality. It is one of the lucky schools that actively embraces diversity and this year we received a sample of their love as soon as we entered the building!

"I remember you, you were with the gentleman who writes with both hands"​

At the end of our discussion a girl approached Panagiotis and said, "I have seen you before, you came to my previous school but there was another gentleman with you who uses both his hands to write", referring to our partner Stefano Vouros born without fingers!
We felt so proud when we realized that through our work children do not stand in a persons' weakness rather than in his potentials!
